Rumford fireplace designed by Robert Beeman, This unit is on a grand scale; it is 14' across and over 8' tall, incorporated in a 24' high wall of local stones. Stone, stained concrete, and steel. Only the redwood baseboard is wood. Contractor: Robert Beeman. High heating efficiency also is aided by the fact that combustion air comes from a vent supplying outside air along the front edge of the grate, rather than using heated air from the house. This vent also serves as a ash dump to a 4' x 8' reinforced concrete ash box which extends 10' below the fireplace. It will take a while to fill up that box! Rumford's typically can be built in sizes anywhere from 24” to 72”. To meet EPA emission standards and local building and safety requirements in some states, Rumford's can be made ‘Certified' . The Rumford wood-burning fireplace, now in wide-spread production by such companies as Buckley Rumford Company in Washington, is actually a fireplace style created in the 18 th century that minimized smoke and maximized energy efficiency. The secrets behind Count Rumford's creation were thus: A fireplace with a high, broad opening. A shallow firebox and amply splayed jambs, reflecting greater amounts of radiant heat. A straightened fire back and rounded front wall of the throat, creating a nozzle to shoot smoke up through the damper and out the chimney, resulting in less heat loss.
