Top Ten Home Decor Trends for 2007

Vicki Ingham, senior editor and group manager of Home Decorating & Design Books, sees formal and traditional decorating styles enjoying new popularity with younger homeowners, as GenXers look to historically inspired design as an anchor. Pairings of traditional and casual, or traditional and modern - once the preserve of high-end designers - will also become increasingly mainstream. Ingham cites Vera Wang's new line of home goods for Kohl's as directly targeted at the consumer who wants "classic style with a modern twist."

According to West, anything goes with regard to textiles - from opulent layering of shimmering tones and earthy textural weaves, to sleek modern and retro chic (retro in line and shape; chic in the combinations of current color and texture.) Anderson adds that in addition to variations on textured leathers, wovens and textures made from resins intertwined with bronzed and antique silver metallics will add a glimpse of glamour.

Home Decor Choices Can Help You Go Green

Equally important, many chemicals embedded in home décor products contribute to chronic lung problems, eczema, headaches and a host of other ailments. Furniture, beds, flooring and accessories made from sustainable non-toxic materials, such as linens made of ‘green’ cotton or other organic fibers, or beds using latex, cotton and wool instead of synthetic materials, are a big step in the eco-friendly home décor direction.

An excellent example of a ‘green’ home décor choice is flooring from FLOR, whose carpet tile products are made wherever possible from recycled and renewable raw materials using renewable energy sources and technologies. Not only can you custom-design your own floor covering -- wall-to-wall or just an area rug -- using FLOR carpet tiles; the company actually pays to have old FLOR carpet tiles returned to them so they can be recycled instead of going to landfills. Eco-friendly décor is good for you and the environment. Next time you’re doing a little home decorating, check out the myriad of green products available.

Home Decor Goes 'Green'

Going "green" is hot right now. It is not just about taking care of the environment; it's stylish for the home, and good for your health. There are several home furnishings out there made from renewable resources, recycled products, or organic materials. Jeanie Pyun from Organic Style magazine visits The Saturday Early Show to talk about eco-friendly items perfect for your home.

The difference between organic and eco-friendly is that organic refers to agriculture or food that is grown without harmful pesticides or toxins. Eco-friendly is a term used to describe products or the making of products that have less of a harmful impact on the environment. Eco-friendly products can be one of three things, Pyun explains in a pre-interview. They are made out of: Something recycled, like plastic milk jugs that end up in furniture. Something that grows quickly and can be replenished, like bamboo. Organic-like cotton that was raised without chemicals or pesticides. There's a common misperception that "eco" products are more expensive across the board. But items like eco-friendly paper are very comparable in price. Also good news is that mainstream retailers, such as L.L.Bean, now carry these products.

Japanese Furniture and Japanese Home Decor

Want to add a Japanese look to your bedroom? Check out some of the cool Japanese stuff they got here.Haiku Designs is proud to offer a distinctive and unique line of Japanese Furniture. From beautiful rice paper lamps and Shoji screens, to dramatic wall-hanging Fountains, our collection of Japanese styled decor is the widest on the market today, and is the perfect addition to any home or office environment. In the West, much of what we think of as Oriental Furniture actually reflects Japanese styles and Zen motifs. The classic simplicity of a Platform. the pure Zen aesthetic of harmony, the use of minimalist paintings depicting waterscapes, Geishas, and Kanji all create a sense of repose and stillness that originated in Japan. We all know about murals but what about the possibilities of graphic stencils? Or, as an alternative to wallpaper or paint, a wall design we're beginning to see in shelter magazines, laser-cut from the self-adhering material used by museums for wall texts? Still, there's plenty to stoke the creative fires here. And besides, not everything is meant to appeal to everyone. Where would the fun be in that? Designing is, like dressing, a matter of individual taste.
